Ethicon’s surgical steel sutures are sterile, non-absorbable sutures made of 316L stainless steel. The material provides high tensile strength and permanent mechanical support for surgical procedures that demand a high degree of stability.
The steel sutures are available in both monofilament and multifilament designs, as well as with or without a needle. The choice of design, size, and needle is tailored to the tissue and the surgical technique.
Steel sutures are non-absorbable and exhibit no significant loss of tensile strength after implantation. They are used, among other things, in sternal closure, abdominal wall closure, hernia surgery, and orthopedic procedures such as cerclage and tendon repairs. These products should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to 316L steel or its components, such as nickel and chromium.
