STRATAFIX Spiral Polypropylene from Ethicon is a synthetic, monofilament, non-absorbable barbed suture made of polypropylene. The spiral-shaped barbs secure the tissue along the suture line and enable continuous closure without traditional surgical knots.
The product line includes both unidirectional and bidirectional versions with various thread sizes, lengths, and needle combinations.
The barbs are positioned around the thread and grip the tissue after each pass. This holds the suture in place during closure and helps distribute the load along the suture line.
The unidirectional models have a single needle and barbs pointing in the same direction. The bidirectional models have a needle at each end and barbs running in opposite directions from the center of the suture.
Polypropylene is not absorbed by the body and is designed to maintain its tensile strength indefinitely. STRATAFIX Spiral Polypropylene is therefore an option for soft tissue closure where permanent support and a knotless suturing technique are appropriate.
The suture is uncolored and has no antibacterial treatment. The choice of type, thread size, and needle should be tailored to the tissue, the load, and the specific surgical technique, and should be made in accordance with the product’s instructions for use.
