STRATAFIX Spiral PDO – Bidirectional, Knotless Suture

STRATAFIX Spiral PDO from Ethicon is a synthetic, monofilament, and absorbable suture made of polydioxanone. The suture features spiral-shaped barbs that secure the tissue without traditional surgical knots. The bidirectional design features a needle at each end and barbs that run in opposite directions from the center of the thread.

Bidirectional knotless closure

Suturing begins at the thread’s central transition zone and continues in two directions. The barbs grip the tissue after each pass and hold the suture in place. The design enables continuous closure and helps distribute the load along the suture line.

STRATAFIX Spiral PDO is available in various suture sizes, lengths, and needle combinations for use in different types of soft tissue closure.

Long-term tissue support

Polydioxanone has a slow resorption profile and is suitable when the tissue requires support during an extended healing period. The suture retains a significant portion of its original tensile strength during the first six weeks and subsequently degrades gradually through hydrolysis. Complete resorption is reported to occur after approximately 120–180 days.

The choice of suture and needle should always be tailored to the tissue type, the load, and the specific surgical technique.
