STRATAFIX Spiral PGA-PCL – Bidirectional, Knotless Suture

STRATAFIX Spiral PGA-PCL from Ethicon is a synthetic, monofilament, absorbable barbed suture made from a copolymer of polyglycolic acid and polycaprolactone. The bidirectional design features a needle at each end and barbs that run in opposite directions from the center of the thread.

The suture is intended for soft tissue closure where an absorbable suture with a relatively short support profile is appropriate.

Bidirectional suturing without knots

Suturing begins at the thread’s central transition zone and continues in two directions. The spiral-shaped barbs grip the tissue after each pass and hold the suture in place without traditional surgical knots. The design enables continuous closure and helps distribute the load along the suture line.

Short-term tissue support and predictable resorption

STRATAFIX PGA-PCL retains approximately 62 percent of its original tensile strength after one week and approximately 27 percent after two weeks. The suture then gradually degrades through hydrolysis and is normally completely resorbed after approximately 90–120 days.

The shorter support profile makes the suture suitable for tissue that heals relatively quickly. It should not be selected when the wound requires long-term mechanical support.
