Catgut Plain from SMI is a natural, absorbable suture made from purified collagen derived from bovine serous tissue. The suture has a short tensile strength profile and is used for soft tissue closure and ligatures where the tissue requires support only during the early healing phase.
Catgut Plain consists of twisted collagen fibers that have been polished to give the thread a smooth, monofilament-like surface. The suture is flexible, uncolored ivory-white, and has no separate surface coating.
After approximately seven days, about 50 percent of the suture’s original tensile strength remains. Complete resorption normally occurs after about 63 days through biological degradation. The rate of resorption may vary between different tissues and increases in infected tissue or environments with high proteolytic activity.
We typically ship your order no later than the next day if your order is received before 2:00 p.m. Do you have any questions about the suture or your order? Don’t hesitate to contact us, and we’ll be happy to help. If you’re looking for the “Chrom” suture from SMI, you’ll find it on the Catgut Suture page.
