Spongostan from Ethicon is a sterile, resorbable local hemostatic agent made from porcine gelatin. The moldable gelatin sponge is applied to the bleeding site and forms a structure that supports platelet adhesion and aggregation.
Spongostan is used as an adjunct during surgical procedures when capillary, venous, or arteriolar bleeding cannot be controlled in a practical or effective manner using pressure, ligation, or other conventional methods. According to the manufacturer’s instructions, the product can be used dry or saturated with sterile sodium chloride solution.
The product line includes Spongostan in various sizes and configurations to suit the treatment area. The material is normally resorbed within four to six weeks. The product is intended for qualified healthcare professionals and must always be used in accordance with the current instructions for use.
