SMI-Spon – Resorbable Hemostatic Gelatin Sponge

SMI-Spon from the Belgian company SMI is a sterile, resorbable local hemostatic agent made from highly purified gelatin. The sponge absorbs blood and fluid and provides a structure that supports the body’s coagulation process at the bleeding site.

SMI-Spon is used as an adjunct for local hemostasis during dental and other surgical procedures. The material can be easily cut to the desired size and applied dry or moistened with sterile saline solution according to the product’s instructions for use. According to the manufacturer, the material can absorb 30–40 times its own weight and is normally resorbed within three to four weeks.

The product line includes several sizes and variants, including SMI-Spon Regular, Standard, Dental, Tampon, Special, and Film. This allows users to select the shape and thickness based on the size, shape, and accessibility of the treatment area.
