Silk sutures from SMI – braided and silicone-coated

Non-absorbable suture – natural – braidedsilk suture

Silk sutures from SMI are braided multifilament sutures made from natural silk fibers derived from the silkworm cocoon. The sutures are silicone-coated, black, and classified as non-absorbable.

Flexible sutures with secure knot retention

The braided construction provides high flexibility and good handling and knotting properties. The silicone coating reduces surface friction and facilitates smooth passage through tissue. The coating also limits capillary transport compared to uncoated multifilament sutures.

For soft tissue closure and ligatures

SMI’s silk sutures are used for general soft tissue closure and ligatures, including in oral surgery, skin closure, general surgery, and gastrointestinal surgery. SMI specifies prolonged tissue support for up to approximately three months.

Silk is a natural material and elicits a moderate tissue reaction. Following implantation, the suture is gradually encapsulated by fibrous connective tissue.
