Daclon from SMI is a synthetic, monofilament, non-absorbable suture made of polyamide 6 or polyamide 6.6. The suture is uncoated and available in blue or black for good visibility in the surgical field.
The monofilament design has a uniform diameter and provides smooth passage through tissue with low tissue resistance. The absence of capillary transport, combined with the material’s flexibility, contributes to easy handling and secure knotting.
Daclon is used for general soft tissue closure and ligatures, including skin closure and in general and plastic surgery. SMI also offers thinner black sizes for procedures such as plastic surgery and ophthalmology.
The suture is classified as non-absorbable and is gradually encapsulated by connective tissue. SMI also states that the suture’s mass decreases by approximately 10 percent per year due to hydrolytic degradation.
