PDS Plus Antibacterial – Slow-Resorbing Monofilament Suture

PDS Plus Antibacterial from Ethicon is a synthetic, monofilament, absorbable suture made of polydioxanone. It has the same basic design and strength profile as PDS II, but is treated with the antibacterial agent triclosan.

The suture is intended for soft tissue closure where the tissue requires support during a prolonged healing period. It is used, among other things, for closing fascia, the abdominal wall, and other slow-pds plus -healing tissues.

Antibacterial protection on the suture’s surface

The triclosan treatment inhibits bacterial colonization and biofilm formation on the suture’s surface. Its efficacy has been demonstrated in vitro against several Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria associated with postoperative wound infections.

The treatment is a complement to established hygiene routines and proper surgical technique. It does not replace the assessment or treatment of infected or contaminated wounds.

Long-term tissue support

The monofilament design ensures smooth passage through tissue and minimizes capillary transport. PDS Plus retains a significant portion of its tensile strength during the first six weeks, thereby providing longer-lasting support than, for example, VICRYL Plus and MONOCRYL Plus.

The suture degrades through hydrolysis and is normally completely absorbed after approximately 182–238 days. The product line includes several suture sizes and needle combinations.
