Ethicon Vicryl Plus is an antibacterial, synthetic, braided, and absorbable suture.
VICRYL Plus Antibacterial from Ethicon is a synthetic, braided, and absorbable suture made of polyglactin 910. The suture has the same basic design and handling characteristics as Coated VICRYL, but is coated with the antibacterial agent triclosan.
VICRYL Plus is used for general soft tissue closure and ligatures, including closure of the peritoneum, fascia, and skin. The product line includes several suture sizes and needle combinations in violet or uncolored versions.
The triclosan coating inhibits bacterial colonization and biofilm formation on the surface of the suture. The antibacterial effect has been demonstrated in vitro against several Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria associated with postoperative wound infections.
The treatment is a complement to established hygiene routines and proper surgical technique. It does not replace the assessment or treatment of contaminated or infected wounds.
The braided and coated design provides good flexibility, controlled knot fixation, and smooth passage through tissue.
VICRYL Plus degrades through hydrolysis and is normally completely absorbed after approximately 56–70 days. It should not be used when the tissue requires long-term mechanical support.
