MONOCRYL Plus Antibacterial from Ethicon is a synthetic, monofilament, and absorbable suture made of polyglacaprone 25. It has the same basic design and handling characteristics as MONOCRYL, but is treated with the antibacterial agent triclosan.

The triclosan treatment inhibits bacterial colonization and biofilm formation on the suture’s surface. The effect has been demonstrated in vitro against several Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria associated with postoperative wound infections. The suture does not replace established hygiene routines or the proper treatment of infected and contaminated wounds.
MONOCRYL Plus is used, among other things, for closing the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and the peritoneum. The smooth monofilament design provides low friction during passage through the tissue and limited capillary transport.
The suture is resorbed through hydrolysis and is completely absorbed after approximately 90–120 days. Most of the tissue support is provided during the first few weeks, and the suture is therefore not intended for tissues that require long-term mechanical support.
